Garlic - When you buy your fresh garlic bulbs they should feel firm with dry skin. It needs to be stored at room temperature - not the fridge. Being in the fridge in plastic wrap, sealed containers or bags, can mean it will sprout or turn mouldy. The best thing to put them in is a mesh produce bag or a wire basket. Anything that allows ventilation.
Once the bulb is broken to remove the cloves the shelf life is reduced. The cloves can last from 3 - 10 days. A whole bulb can last a couple of weeks.
It is possible to freeze garlic. You can pop whole, unpeeled cloves in cling wrap, aluminium foil or a freezer bag and leave it in the freezer. Then you just take out what you need when you need it! If the cloves are stuck together you can grate off however much you need.
Ginger - Store your fresh unpeeled ginger in a airtight container or ziplock bag in the vegetable crisper.
Fresh Chilli - There are lots of ways to store and preserve chilli’s. Some are more time consuming than others. If this interests you there’s heaps of information available online.
Due to the nature of Strictly You, you will be buying fresh exactly what you need for the coming week. Therefore the easiest thing here is to keep your chilli in a paper bag in the vegetable crisper in the fridge. You should get a week out of them this way.
Avocado - We love avocados! They are packed with good fats, fibre, antioxidants and vitamins. If using the avocado up within a couple of days, cut it lengthways and scoop out what you need. Keep the pit and the skin so that you can put it back together again- sitting one half on top of the other. Put it back in the fridge.
You can also store it in an airtight container with a bit of onion in there too. Or squeeze some lemon or lime juice over the exposed flesh to stop it from browning.
Veggie Sticks - If you find it easier to prepare your veggie sticks for your snacks through the week in one go...go for it! All you need to do is make sure they’re stored properly and they’ll last you the week. Wash them thoroughly, chop into whatever shape you prefer and store in tightly wrapped cling wrap or aluminium foil, an airtight container or ziplock bag. You can pack them into your snack portions so all you do is grab it out of the fridge.
